Self esteem- and Drama in Education
The Development of
Drama Education with Reference to its Application in Self–Esteem
Summary
The lineage of Drama as an active learning method will be
traced from the beginning of this century.
This sets the context in which Drama in Education evolved. In this study I will review its use as a
form of interactive collaboration and the development of models of drama from
the personal to the social.
Connections to theories of socio-dramatic play will be
illustrated. Developments in the role of the teacher and views on interventionist
play will be described. Techniques and styles of drama will be examined, from
Psychodrama to Drama for free-expression and Drama for personal development.
More recent developments in Drama in Education will be reviewed, particularly
teacher-as-participant type drama, which changed the educational purpose and
dynamic into a heuristic social voyage in search of meaning.

Johnny's Education??
‘We are used to hearing our schools assailed by critics who want to know why ‘Johnny can’t read, Johnny can’t write’ and who call for a return to ‘the basics’… But why do we stop worrying there?

Drama Storytelling techniques
1. It’s important in the classroom, to try to have complete silence before
you begin, so that the children are concentrating and focused on the story and the person
reading it. Turn off any background
music.

Working AS a group as well as IN a group.
Introductory Session
Approach: Interactive Playing, out of role, to socialise the group
Guiding principle: Using whole group extravert (working unselfconsciously in a group, individual focus- diverging out to the group) and whole group introvert (working as a group, social focus, converging on a concern).
Working in a group
· Pairs introduction. Introduce yourself to the person beside you. One minute each. Tell back to that person what you have heard. Then find another couple and introduce your partner to them.
· Circle.
· Good morning. Then with hands connecting and saying your name.
· Eye colour. How many people in this room here have blue eyes? Count them.(Include the teacher) .
Using PVC
[1] Titanic. 1.Move around the room in a circle as a group. When I clap you go quickly into groups of whatever number I call out. 2. Add Titanic tension. Bring to pair.
[2] Pair work counting 100 to 1 -distraction without touch.
[3] Circle of counting-Concentration. step in and count. If two step in then go back to beginning.for beginners try up to 5 first and extend as needed.
· Prerequisites of Drama . Explain Safety as psychological in nature as opposed to physical.
· Contrast origin and meanings of
[a] Theatre [Théaomai =behold the face of God] and Théatron [ where one watches a theatrical performance] and
[b] Drama in Education : [ Draó = to do and Educo to lead out (of ignorance) = Lead out by doing.
Remind about Diary to be written up each week.
